MGM Raises Awareness on Sustainability in the Community with Hotel Tour and Seminar

Group of 50 Local and International Students from MPI Gain Insights on Green Concepts and Measures with Introduction Conducted by MGM Team Members

Oct 31, 2016

[October 31, 2016, Macau] MGM and the Gaming Teaching and Research Centre (GTRC) of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) co-organized the Sustainability Seminar and Tour for a group of 50 students from the Gaming and Recreation Management bachelor's degree program on October 25, which was the first tour of its kind ever organized with an enterprise from a private sector by GTRC. MGM has been consistently supportive to Green initiatives and this activity is one of the Company’s many programs to spike interest and raise awareness on Sustainability within the community.

During the seminar, Ms. Rebecca Donnellan, Director of Sustainability at MGM, introduced the core concepts of sustainability as well as the roles and responsibilities of large corporations by using MGM as a case study. Students were then taken on a tour to both front-of-house and back-of-house areas to experience firsthand how MGM implements initiatives to reduce energy, water and waste across the property, so as to further its sustainability aims. At the tour, students saw up close the green initiatives in guest rooms such as the energy- and water-efficient equipment, soap donation program to the needy through an external partnership with Clean the World, as well as the green housekeeping procedures and recycling activities. The tour also included a visit to the Facilities Management Department for students to learn about the Building Management System, which MGM utilizes to actively monitor energy and water consumption, ensuring real-time management and maintenance. In addition, recycling across the property is a focus - with recyclables collected in a centralized location called Recycling Zone; students learnt here about the importance of recycling, both at home and at work, for reducing the environmental impacts on waste pollution and creating a cleaner and greener Macau.

Dr. Hester Cheang, Director of Gaming Teaching and Research Centre at MPI, expressed her gratitude towards MGM by delivering an insightful presentation to the students. “MGM has consistently paid close attention to sustainability in hotel facilities through its comprehensive environmental program. Today's visit has inspired our students to be more actively engaged in environmental conservation and has deepened understanding of why and how the hospitality industry is investing in sustainable operations.”

Ms. Rebecca Donnellan said, “It was a wonderful opportunity for us to show local youth up close just how important it is to support green initiatives in our daily lives, both at home and at work, to create a better and more sustainable future. It takes collaboration and collective efforts to conserve resources within the community as a whole, and we hope that the seminar and tour organized with MPI today, will help inspire and create awareness.”

MGM has always been an avid supporter in sustainability initiatives while nurturing local youth with the vision to Create a Better Tomorrow Today. We have been organizing a wide array of programs for local schools and community for years, in an effort to enable locals to gain deeper insights into the hospitality industry and related areas. MGM will continue to organize different sustainability events for local schools and communities as a way to inspire youth and spark their interests in this area that is core to the sustainable future of Macau, which in turn will help develop Macau into a world leisure and tourism center.
