MGM Hosts Interview Day for Candidates with Disabilities

Enhancing Workplace Equality and Social Inclusion while Expanding MGM's Golden Lion Team

Dec 5, 2016

[December 5, 2016, Macau] MGM hosted an interview day for local candidates with disabilities, which is one of the on-going campaigns included in the series of Mass Recruitment Fairs for the upcoming MGM COTAI’s Grand Opening, scheduled for Q2 of 2017. A total of 26 disabled candidates were referred to participate in this Campaign, in coordination with the Labour Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR (DSAL) and in collaboration with four local associations including Fuhong Society of Macau-Pou Choi Centre, Hong Kong Hin, The Macau Association for The Mentally Handicapped-Sam Meng Chi and Macau Special Olympics-Ngai Chun Center. The initiative is intended to encourage those with disabilities to engage in employment and promote social inclusion while MGM expands its Golden Lion Team.

The event took place at MGM MACAU’s The Vista on December 1, offering non-gaming job openings under six different departments including Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, Kitchen & Stewarding, Floral, Rooms and Finance - Warehouse. Ms. Margaret Mang, Head of Employment Department of DSAL, representatives from the Fuhong Society of Macau-Pou Choi Centre, Hong Kong Hin, The Macau Association for The Mentally Handicapped-Sam Meng Chi and Macau Special Olympics-Ngai Chun Center were also in attendance to observe and exchange ideas with Mr. Grant Bowie, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited, and Ms. Wendy Yu, Senior Vice President of Human Resources of MGM, in preparation for the upcoming collaborations open to people with disabilities who are interested in joining MGM's Golden Lion Team. The event also included a session where three of our disabled team members shared their own experience of working at the resort, and how they are inspired by the equality and inclusion within the MGM family.

“There is an assumption that people with disabilities might have greater absence and lower performance levels, but in fact the opposite is true,” Mr. Grant Bowie said. “We look at talent in all their forms, and take a progressive approach to workplace equality and social inclusion, as we continue to expand MGM's footprint in Macau through many different initiatives that are socially aware. We believe that great people create great moments. As an employer, the key thing is to get the best staff and, if they need extra support, they are able to get that at MGM. We will continue to be playing its part for a better Macau, helping to open minds and improve attitudes towards disability.”

Ms. Margaret Mang said, “We are delighted that MGM provides opportunities for people with disabilities, in collaboration with local associations, to help them develop professional skills and inspire their career paths at a resort of international level. MGM is helping them do the best they can and make important contributions to the local job market, allowing them to discover their strengths, their achievements and to be amazed at the things that they can accomplish.”

Ms. Moon Wong, who is hearing and speech impaired, has been working at MGM as a public areas attendant since its opening, said, “I do enjoy each and every day working at MGM, especially creating meaningful friendships with colleagues, using sign language and my smile.” She is also one of the Ambassador of our Mass Recruitment Campaign for MGM COTAI.

In line with the vision to Create a Better Tomorrow Today, MGM has begun hiring team members with disabilities since its opening, in 2007. At present, a total of 22 disabled employees are working at both MGM’s non-gaming and gaming operations under various departments. In addition, MGM has won a total of six awards from the Hiring Disabled Staff Recognition Scheme and Outstanding Disabled Staff Recognition Scheme, both organized by the Labour Affairs Bureau and Social Welfare Bureau the Macao SAR, being awarded in alternating sequence since 2009. MGM will continue to work with Macao's government departments and local community associations, and to help more disabled people to participate and contribute more actively to our society, as we strongly believe that fairness and equal opportunities for everyone, without exception, will make all of us lead fuller and happier lives.
