MGM MACAU and MGM Resorts International Join World Observance of Earth Hour 2017

Launching Green Monday Initiative to Promote Low Carbon Living

Mar 25, 2017

[March 25, 2017, Macau] MGM MACAU once again joined the global effort in the observance of Earth Hour on March 25, together with 17 properties under MGM Resorts International in the United States, by turning off non-essential lighting for one hour to raise awareness on climate change. Organized by the World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF) in 2007, Earth Hour has grown into a global movement with millions of supporters in more than 178 countries and territories.

On Saturday, March 25, at 8:30pm, MGM MACAU turned off the property’s exterior lighting including the MGM MACAU illuminated signboard, the fountain outside our hotel’s main entrance, exterior façade flood lights, spotlights at the Lion Statue and the LED screen at the North-East casino entrance. Meanwhile, all treatment rooms at Tria Spa powered off and were illuminated with ambience candles.

As a Company, MGM Resorts International, including MGM MACAU, has saved more than 140 million kilowatt hours of energy, amounting to 73,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, in the past five years (the equivalent annual carbon footprint of over 15,000 cars).

To support low carbon living and raise awareness that our day-to-day actions can have an impact on the environment and contribute to climate change, MGM MACAU officially launched Green Monday in the employee dining room on March 20. “On every Monday from now on, MGM MACAU will be serving a special low carbon menu which has been prepared with the environment in mind, with key principles including: no beef (as livestock production accounts for more greenhouse gas emissions that the whole transportation sector combined); locally sourced products, to reduce transportation emissions; and also promoting more vegetables and healthier food options. Eating green is not only good for the environment but also for our health”, said Mr. Geoffrey Simmons, MGM MACAU’s Executive Chef.

“Environmental sustainability is part of our operating ethos and we remain committed to engaging our employees and communities through activities such as these to help build a greener and cleaner Macau for generations to come”, said Mr. Grant Bowie, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited.

Green Monday is one of the many initiatives taking place during MGM’s Go Green Campaign, an internal two-week event promoting environmental protection from March 20 to April 3. Other activities included as part of the Campaign include: a Go Green Fair, with fun games, prizes and environmental program information for employees to get involved in; a marine conversation talk educating employees on the importance of responsible waste and recycling habits to protect marine life; a tree planting and maintenance exercise;  and a beach cleaning activity.
