[August 7, 2017, Macau] MGM Junior Lion Dance Exchange Visit to Foshan was concluded successfully yesterday. With its pivotal role in promoting the traditional Chinese lion dance among youth in Macau, MGM specially organized an exchange visit to Foshan, the birthplace of lion dance, for 24 children between 5 to 10 years old of the “MGM Junior Lion Dance Continuous Training Program,” on August 5 and 6.
On this two-day themed trip, the group visited the Foshan Nanhai Huangfeihong Zhonglian Cable Lion Dragon and Martial Art Association and the Nanhai Xiqiao Dragon and Lion Dance Wushu Sports Association, the two nationally acclaimed lion dance troupes in China. The Huangfeihong Zhonglian Cable Lion Dragon Dance Troupe has won over 30 medals in international tournaments. It has also been recognized by the Guangdong Provincial Government as the “Base for Inheritance of Chinese Culture” and the “Base for Inheritance of Guangdong Province’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.” The Nanhai Xiqiao Dragon and Lion Dance Wushu Sports Association also performed at the opening ceremony of the 9th National Games of China.
The purpose of the trip is to further develop the knowledge, skills and understanding of the young enthusiasts on traditional lion dance. The coaches from both Macau and Foshan particularly conducted a sharing session for all junior lion dancers to learn and train lion dance amongst their peers. They then went sightseeing in the renowned historical sites in Foshan, including the Foshan Ancestral Temple and the Huang Feihong Memorial Hall, gaining value added knowledge and experience.
“Passing on this tradition and culture from one generation to the next is vital.” Mr. Mak Chi Leong, Chief Coach of the “MGM Junior Lion Dance Continuous Training Program,” said. “The trip offers a great opportunity for our junior lion dancers to better understand this significant piece of Chinese heritage at its birthplace. Through peer learning with the two elite lion dance troupes in China, we hope that we can further inspire the local youth on this traditional cultural sport.”
Kit Mak, leader of the MGM Junior Lion Dance troupe, expressed her personal joy by saying, “This is my first time learning out of Macau and it is full of fun and excitement. I am so excited to meet with our peers in China and make friends with them while learning more about lion dance. I can see that we can have room for improvement in our performances. I hope I can have more chances to travel to other places or to return here in the future to sharpen my skills in lion dance.”
