MGM Participates in Inaugural Art Macao with Hua Yuan to Unleash a New Ink Interpretation
Building a Public Art Platform & Passing on Chinese Cultural Heritage
MGM hosts opening ceremony of Hua Yuan exhibition at MGM COTAI.

A leader in art and cultural tourism, MGM actively collaborates with artists across the globe to curate artwork, consistently pushing the boundaries of artistic innovation at its own creative spaces. Supporting Art Macao, the city’s mega international art and cultural event, MGM proudly presents Hua Yuan at MGM COTAI to tell the story of its roots in the art of ink reinvented by advanced technology. Unleashing creativity and embracing the diversity of art and entertainment, Hua Yuan stimulates mutual exchange and interaction between public and art.

Connecting Macau with the world of art, MGM is devoted to building an international art stage that promotes multilateral interaction and making art more accessible to people from all walks of life. The year 2019 marks a double celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Establishment of the People’s Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of the Establishment of Macau SAR. Through Hua Yuan, the essence of Chinese culture and art is preserved and progressed, allowing the public to experience the beauty of ink and wonder at its possibilities.

The Opening Ceremony of Hua Yuan was held at the Spectacle of MGM COTAI on June 7. Officiating guests of the ceremony include: Dr. Alexis Tam, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR; Ms. Wang Dong, Deputy Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao SAR; Ms. Zhu Hong, Deputy Director General of Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR; Ms. Mok Ian Ian, Director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau; Ms. Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of Macao Government Tourism Office; Contemporary artists Ms. Jennifer Wen Ma and Mr. Yang Yongliang; Ms. Pansy Ho, Co-Chairperson & Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited; and Mr. Grant Bowie, Chief Executive Officer & Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited.

In her opening speech, Ms. Pansy Ho said, “As Macau is pressing ahead with establishing itself as a base for multicultural exchanges and cooperation with an emphasis on Chinese culture, Hua Yuan presents a modern artistic ink experience, which is an integral part of Chinese cultural legacy. We have invited two talented Chinese artists to create an extraordinary art experience by using MGM Theater and the Spectacle as canvases to realize the reinterpretation of ‘ink painting’, giving arts and culture an interactive edge and at the same time, passing on the Chinese cultural heritage.”

Co-curated by Ms. Miriam Sun, Executive Director of the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art and MGM, Hua Yuan is among the highlights of Art Macao: International Art Exhibition. With the commissioned artworks of two contemporary artists, it unlocks a root-seeking journey in the art of ink painting. In Journey to the Dark II, Yang Yongliang harnesses technology and videography in a time lapse of Macau, and makes his breakthrough in digital art. Projected at the 28-million-pixel screen in the MGM Theater, his artwork redefines the traditional Chinese screen painting. Meanwhile, Jennifer Wen Ma uses the intrinsic connectivity and diversity of ink to present A Metamorphosis: No End to End, a large-scale immersive multimedia and art installation at the Spectacle. Comprised of three garden landscapes, there are hints of color on the traditional black-and-white ink layout. Coupled with the use of laser technology and the art of Chinese paper flower, the installation brings the natural, sculptural and virtual textures together to demonstrate the versatility of ink. At the end of August, MGM Theater will also stage Paradise Interrupted, another ink rendition reinterpreted as a kunqu-inspired installation opera in one act.

Besides Hua Yuan at MGM COTAI, MGM also supports Art Macao: International Art Exhibition with one of the outdoor art installations, Sanctuary by Macau artists João Ó & Rita Machado, displaying at the Mount Fortress Garden from June 6.

From June to October, MGM showcases special ink artworks at the Macao Museum of Art, the main venue of the Art Macao: International Art Exhibition. Contemporary calligraphy master, Wang Dongling presents his 18-meter-long masterpiece Drinking Alone Under the Moon by Li Bai in “chaos script” (luanshu).  He integrates his work with Li Bai’s poem and completely breaks the limitation of space between lines of calligraphy, re-constructing the spatial sense of traditional calligraphy with Wang’s imprint and liberating the bondage of calligraphy forms. Right next to this masterpiece, Yang Yongliang has customized some new works such as Journey to the Dark II, The Waves, The Traces and The Departure, and an extension of Jennifer Wen Ma’s A Metamorphosis: No End to End is also displayed.

Under the patronage of the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government, the inaugural Art Macao is organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Macao Government Tourism Office and co-organized by the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, the Higher Education Bureau, various foreign consulates, and prominent Macau enterprises such as MGM. From June to October 2019, the event aims at developing Macau into a world-class exchange platform for culture and arts.
