From October 5, 2019 to February 9, 2020, MGM presents “Rooster, Tiger, Sheep by Snake” – Wen-You Cai Photography Exhibition.

As a leader of cultural tourism in Macau, MGM is committed to building an international art and cultural platform that offers  innovative and interactive diverse art and cultural experiences for all. In this year of double jubilation  with the celebration of both the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Macao SAR Government, MGM proudly presents “Rooster, Tiger, Sheep by Snake” – Wen-You Cai Photography Exhibition from October 5, 2019 to February 9, 2020. This debut exhibition of the young and talented photographer will bring joy and happiness to residents and tourists alike.

Esteemed guests officiating the opening of the “Rooster, Tiger, Sheep by Snake” – Wen-You Cai Photography Exhibition included Dr. Ip Peng Kin, Chief of Office of the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government; Mr. Si Chen, Senior Assistant Director of Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao S.A.R.; Mr. Leong Sek Min, Acting Director of the Macao Museum of Art; Mr. Felix Wong, Head of the Inspection of Pari-Mutuels Department of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau; Ms. Pansy Ho, Co-Chairperson & Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited; Mr. Kenneth Feng, President, Chief Strategic Officer & Director of MGM China Holdings Limited; Special Special Shop Manager Mr. Weston Wittry; Photographer Ms. Cai Wen-You, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cai Guo-Qiang, renowned Chinese international contemporary artist.

Ms. Pansy Ho, Co-Chairperson & Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited expressed her appreciation and admiration in her thank you remarks, emphasizing the importance of family as portrayed in Wen-You’s work. “Parents are the very first and the most important instructors for children in life. The achievements of Wen-You shows that family plays a vital role for the young generations on helping them to find their true selves and develop their talents. We want to share family harmony and happiness with visitors through this never before published family album.”

The exhibition title “Rooster, Tiger, Sheep by Snake” draws inspiration from traditional Chinese Zodiac signs; space highlighting the particular four that represent her family members. The four family members were born in different eras with different cultural backgrounds, yet they resemble a harmonious, loving and playful family living together. Wen-You’s strong respect for traditional Chinese culture has not faded despite residing in New York with her family, she cites that she has “a funny and humorous family, an artist father, a childhood in travel and journeys around museums, and an exposure to interesting things”. At the age of five, Wen-You was gifted a camera and from then on her life became intrinsically entwined with photography; the immense joy of clicking the shutter began to grow in her.

Over the years, Wen-You has captured various moments of her family, in which they show their true selves unreservedly in front of her camera. The strong family connection did not only boost the confidence of the once introverted girl, but also her determination in her photography career. Wen-You said, "Through my lens, I steadily started to value the communication between different generations. The shooting process has also helped transforming myself to become who I am today, and harmoniously supported by my family.”

Decorated in serene blue like trickles of flowing water to symbolize the boundless passing of time, the exhibition is categorized in 4 sections: “During High School and University”, “Post-University Since 2012”, “Family Trips and Work Scenes”, and “Growth and Life.” The exhibition features 176 works, of which 173 are family and day-to-day life film photography taken from 2006 through 2018, spanning over 30 countries and regions including China, the United States, and Italy.

In addition to the exhibition, MGM also extends the collaboration with Wen-You to launch her brand store, Special Special, the first-ever flash retailing project at MGM COTAI. The amusement park themed pop-up store features items created by independent artists, reflecting a retro ambiance that is reminiscent of happy childhood curiosities. MGM’s partnership with Special Special reinforces its commitment in cultivating talented young artists and fostering cultural and artistic exchange across the globe.
