MGM integrates modern concepts of environmental sustainability into its daily operations, which form the bedrock of its green measures and effective execution. The unceasing efforts have recently won MGM MACAU Gold Award in the “2019 Macao Green Hotel Award”, organized by the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) in collaboration with the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO). This accolade not only puts the property on a par with MGM COTAI which achieved gold in 2018, but also mirrors MGM’s devotion to work with different communities under its ethos of “Create a Better Tomorrow Today.”
The latest Gold Award earned by MGM MACAU acknowledges its adoption of advanced green technologies and significant progress in food waste management, energy saving and emissions along with waste reduction and recycling. Last year, the hotel became the first to deploy the ORCA food waste disposal solution in the city. This program uses the ground-breaking aerobic digestion technology to treat food waste on-site, transforming leftovers into environmentally friendly liquid within 24 hours. The initiative can help to divert 400 tons of food waste from the incineration plant every year. Meanwhile, MGM COTAI has converted more than 200 tons of food waste into organic fertilizer since its installation of composter, which feeds the plants at MGM properties and considerably reduces the use of chemical fertilizer.
MGM also strives to enhance its energy saving measures. Its chiller plant was upgraded to attain full automation for increasing energy efficiency, while a HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) optimization project was carried out to reduce energy usage and cost. In 2019, MGM MACAU and MGM COTAI achieved a normalized energy saving of 7.8% and 4.7% respectively as compared to 2018. As part of its effort to help reduce air pollution, MGM is installing a thermal solar panel and photovoltaic system to generate renewable energy. In a similar vein, the Company introduced 10 electric buses to its fleet to reduce exhaust emissions. It also installed a total of 9 electric vehicle charging stations at its two properties to motivate more people to support green commuting.
MGM also places equal emphasis on water conservation. Both MGM MACAU and MGM COTAI feature a system to recycle wastewater, which collects chilled water from air-conditioning systems for flushing the toilet or for reuse in the chiller system. In comparison with 2013, MGM MACAU recorded a decrease of 15% in water consumption. As a believer in reducing waste at source, MGM became a pioneer in switching to biodegradable containers and cutlery and its efforts paid off last April with all single-use plastic products removed from its restaurants, saving 4.5 million pieces of plastic. Its initiative to install beverage stations at the casino floors has eliminated the distribution of over 1 million plastic bottles last year (for both MGM MACAU and MGM COTAI). Separately, collection points of plastic, paper, glass, metal, e-waste, safety gear and coffee capsule were set up at MGM’s back-of-house areas to support recycling and raise team members’ environmental awareness.
MGM’s environmental management system was built on the best practice framework, enabling the Company to be ISO14001:2015 certified. Both of its properties attained the ISO 50001 certification for effective energy management. On the back of its green commitment, MGM won several regional accolades last year, including honors at the “Green Building Award”, “IFMA Asia Pacific Awards of Excellence”, and “ASHRAE Technology Awards – Honorable Mention in both Region (APAC) and Society (Global) Level”. Meanwhile, MGM COTAI is also the largest property and the first mega-size complex project in Macau to achieve the China Green Building Design Label Three-Star Certification.
