MGM is committed to aligning our day-to-day operations with green policies of the Macau SAR government, striving to help shape Macau into a greener, low-carbon city. With half of natural gas main pipelines on Macau Peninsula in place and to further support the government’s call for a wider adoption of natural gas, MGM is pleased to announce that MGM MACAU has inked an agreement with Nam Kwong Natural Gas Company Ltd on the natural gas changeover at MGM MACAU.
The overhaul is slated to be completed by 2022, when MGM MACAU will be the first integrated resort on Macau Peninsula to switch to natural gas. Together with MGM COTAI which has been utilizing natural gas since its opening, MGM will become to be the first integrated resort operators to have all its properties fully converted to clean and low-carbon natural gas, fueling our operations with greener energy and reaching another milestone in sustainable development.
MGM has been adhering to its sustainable development strategies of environment protection and low carbon strategy through its steadfast green operations as well as energy saving and carbon-reducing endeavors. To fully support the Nation’s climate goals of peaking carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, MGM has identified short-term and long-term goals to spearhead the industry’s eco-conscious efforts toward a net-zero carbon economy. Our mid-term and long-term approaches include achieving green transport through fully switched to electric shuttle buses by 2023 and a target of achieving normalized energy saving of 13% by the end of 2025 as compared to 2019.
The Natural Gas Changeover project is a high-quality, large-scale sustainability game plan to propel MGM toward a full conversion to natural gas, in a bid to better tackle climate change. The project will result in a reduction of 11% on MGM’s annual carbon emissions, which is equivalent to planting 14,000 trees.
The Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA), said, “The government calls on all walks of life to join forces to help attain carbon neutrality as early as possible. Natural gas is a cleaner and low-carbon energy choice which helps accelerate Macau’s transition into a green and eco-conscious city. Hence, we are pleased to see large integrated resort operator ramping up the scale of natural gas usage proactively to respond to the government’s green policies, pitching in to shape Macau into a greener city.”
Having been at the forefront of sustainability, MGM has continuously drawn on its sustainability edges and act as a precursor to contribute to green policies laid down by the government and the Nation. As of now, MGM COTAI is the only mega complex and hotel in Macau to receive three-star certification in both Green Building Design and Operation Label. The achievements have also brought MGM COTAI the glory of being the first hotel in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and second in Greater China to receive the certifications. In 2018, MGM became the first integrated resort operator in Macau to abandon all single-use plastics in takeaway packaging, saving a total of 4.5 million pieces of plastics. The Company has also been phasing out the provision of plastic-bottled water, eliminating the use of over 1 million plastic bottles annually.
