Bids Farwell to Monumental Art Installation Exhibition with a Taste of Sweetness
[November 3, 2015 – Macau] While MGM China endeavors to bring in the foremost and creative artistic works to the region, the property also puts tremendous efforts into a wide range of philanthropic initiatives. In connection with “Joana Vasconcelos at MGM MACAU”, an exhibition that unveils the Valkyrie Octopus, MGM China launched the “Joana Vasconcelos at MGM MACAU – Orbis Fundraising Program,” from which the Company doubled-up all proceeds from the sale of the Valkyrie-themed pastry to support Orbis’ sight-saving projects around the globe. A check-presentation ceremony was held to mark the donation of the raised proceeds amounting to MOP183,000.
The exhibition was held in March this year at MGM MACAU, and ran until the end of October. During the exhibition, MGM China organized the “Joana Vasconcelos at MGM MACAU – Orbis Fundraising Program,” with the support by Vasconcelos’ charity foundation, Fundação Joana Vasconcelos – Lisboa. Inspired by the vibrant colors of the Valkyrie Octopus, MGM’s Pastry Team created the Valkyrie-themed pastry, which were on sale between April and October 31.
Grant Bowie, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited, said, “The exhibition of Joana Vasconcelos’ Valkyrie Octopus at MGM MACAU may have ended, but the beauty of art, vision and compassion within our community stays with us. While we continue to bring in spectacles and unparalleled experiences to Macau, we are also dedicated to creating a better tomorrow today by giving back to the community.”
“We are thankful to MGM and the artist, Joana Vasconcelos, whose beautiful collaboration brought colors and new hope to the lives of the visually impaired. Orbis believes everyone has the right to sight and we are grateful MGM MACAU shares the same vision throughout these years,” said Vivian Lo, Director of Development at Orbis Macau.
The exhibition ran for eight months at MGM MACAU, and is the first ever exhibition in the China region for world-renowned contemporary Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos. This visionary installation not only highlights Macau’s historic role as an important bridge between China and Portugal for the past 500 years, but also opens a new chapter in cultural exchange between the two nations.
