MGM has been striving to develop and enrich cultural tourism experiences that embody its “Art of Living” ethos. This time, MGM joins forces with the world-leading auction house Christie’s for the first time to present “Liu Ye: at High Peak” Debut Exhibition in Macau. This event comes as Macau’s first solo exhibition of Liu Ye, one of the most sought-after Chinese contemporary artists. It also features a series of modern Chinese poetries, thoughtfully curated by Christie's team to adorn Liu’s artworks throughout the exhibition. Besides, art docents from Christie’s and MGM join hands to provide the public with professional guided tours of the exhibits, immersing visitors in an artistic world that seamlessly combines poetry and painting.
Liu Ye, known as a major representative of contemporary Chinese art, has been raised under the heavy influence of Chinese and Western literature. He demonstrates the full spectrum of diverse Chinese and Western art philosophies in his artistic creations. The name of the exhibition "At High Peak" comes from “Gazing at Mount Tai”, which is a poem written by the prestigious Chinese poet Du Fu in the Tang dynasty. The appealingly expansive view depicted in the poem epitomizes the forward-looking and proactive spirit – that dovetails with Liu Ye’s accomplishments in today’s art market and MGM’s vision. MGM hopes to further highlight Macau’s “One Base” positioning advantages to the world through the east-meet-west elements of this exhibition.
The grand opening ceremony of exhibition was held in MGM COTAI today (April 12). It was attended by a group of guests, including Yin Rutao, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR; Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office; Cheong Lai San, Vice President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government; Francis Belin, President of Christie’s Asia Pacific; and Hubert Wang, President and Chief Operating Officer of MGM China Holdings Limited.
Hubert Wang, President and Chief Operating Officer of MGM China Holdings Limited, said, “MGM always goes above and beyond to create world-class art and cultural experiences for our guests. This exhibition marks the first collaboration between MGM and Christie's, joining hands to bring together this rare collection of Liu Ye to Macau. It’s another testament to our strength in incorporating creativity and ingenuity for cultural tourism. MGM will continue to embody the concept of “Art of Living”, bridging Macau with international guests, while amplifying Macau as a diverse cultural tourist destination.”
Kevin Ching, Chairman of Christie’s Asia, said, “Christie’s is pleased to launch its first partnership with MGM to present this solo exhibition of Liu Ye’s works to art aficionados in Macau. I have also had the honor to handpick a number of modern poems for this exhibition. I hope the artist’s masterpieces can strike a chord with the audience in Macau with the help of these poems.”
Meticulously curated by Jacky Ho, Vice President of the 20th & 21st Century Art Department, Christie’s Asia Pacific, and his team, the exhibition “Liu Ye: at High Peak” features 11 paintings by Liu Ye with a total value of over HK$300 million. This collection offers a review of Liu Ye’s artistic journey over three decades, showcasing the pinnacles of his career. Visitors are invited to delve deep into his visual language and the poetic soul behind his paintings. All pieces in this exhibition are on loan from private collectors across the world, with only a few exhibited to the public before. Among these paintings, “Smoke”, a masterpiece from his signature crimson series, was sold at an eye-watering price by an international auction house in Asia, breaking the artist’s auction record as well as being one of the most valuable contemporary Chinese artworks.
The exhibition is open to the public with free admission from April 12 to May 5 at ‘M Art, located at the Lion Lobby of MGM COTAI. Art enthusiasts and tourists from all over the world, as well as residents, can enjoy the works of the prominent contemporary artist at close quarters, while embracing the picturesque and poetic landscape woven behind. In addition, With the commitment to integrating tourism, culture, and art, MGM has rolled out accommodation package deals, “Art Experience Hospitality”, bringing together a series of experiences including accommodation, guided art tours, and star-rated dining to create an unparalleled artistic journey for visitors from near and far.
