[June 11, 2025, Macau] In celebration of China’s Cultural and Natural Heritage Day on June 14, the POLY MGM MUSEUM (“Museum”) proudly presents the “Intangible Cultural Heritage Conversation Series”, a cultural initiative running from June through August. Each month, the Museum will host engaging sharing sessions, each spotlighting a distinct intangible cultural heritage craft—cloisonné, Guangcai porcelain, and pith painting—inviting participants to explore their rich histories, cultural significance, and intricate craftsmanship.  Open to the public, the series aims to deepen appreciation for these heritage skills while fostering greater awareness and wider international recognition of Chinese intangible cultural heritage. Additionally, exclusive sessions will be arranged for the Museum’s docents, equipping them  with enhanced expertise to enrich visitors’ cultural tourism experiences.

The inaugural session, held today (June 11) at the POLY MGM MUSEUM, explored   “Cloisonné: The Inheritance and Innovation of Imperial Palace Art”. The event welcomed distinguished guest speakers,  including Li Li, Director of the Palace Art Specialized Committee of China Arts and Crafts Society and Former Deputy Director of the Shenyang Palace Museum; and Zhong Liansheng, Deputy Director of the Palace Art Specialized Committee of China Arts and Crafts Society, National Arts and Crafts Master, Representative Inheritor of Cloisonné Crafts, and designer of the POLY MGM MUSEUM’s cloisonné “dougong” brackets. The session attracted a diverse audience of more than 200 participants from the cultural and arts sectors, academia, and the general public, sparking insightful discussions on the preservation and contemporary reinterpretation of traditional craftsmanship.

The event successfully established a platform for cross-disciplinary dialogue. Li Li shared the Committee’s achievements in preserving and modernizing intangible heritage, illustrating how imperial artistic elements have been seamlessly incorporated into contemporary design, a testament to the enduring evolution of traditional culture. Zhong Liansheng, drawing upon more than five decades of expertise, provided a comprehensive overview of cloisonné’s historical progression and contemporary innovations. He also shared his invaluable experience in adapting this traditional craft into modern architectural and artistic elements within the POLY MGM MUSEUM.

Cristina Kuok, Senior Vice President of Arts and Culture at MGM, stated: “At MGM, we embrace the philosophy of ‘Art of Living’, and the ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage Conversation Series’ reflects this vision. Through collaborations with intangible cultural heritage inheritors and cultural experts, we aim to offer visitors more than just a museum experiencewe strive to immerse them in a rich cultural journey that extends beyond physical spaces, fostering cross-disciplinary dialogue and creative exchange that revitalizes traditional crafts. At the same time, recognizing the important role of cultural transmission for every key player, we have arranged exclusive learning opportunities for our Museum docents to engage directly with intangible cultural heritage masters, nurturing local talents in arts and culture through a variety of dedicated events.”

The two upcoming sessions, scheduled for July and August, will delve into the rich histories and modern development of Guangcai porcelain and pith painting. Interested participants can register via the official POLY MGM MUSEUM website. Looking ahead, the Museum will continue to roll out a variety of cultural promotion and exchange events, solidifying its role as a bridgehead for Chinese culture’s global outreach and empowering the vitality of intangible cultural heritage in contemporary society. These ongoing efforts will contribute to Macau’s vision of becoming a dynamic hub for exchange and co-operation, where Chinese culture remains the foundation while embracing the coexistence of diverse cultural influences.
