[August 27, 2025, Macau] Presented by MGM and renowned filmmaker Zhang Yimou, the residency show Macau 2049 was honored with the Annual Innovative Performance IP Award at the 2025 Weibo Cultural Night held in Zhengzhou. The award highlights the show’s innovative approach to preserving and revitalizing traditional Chinese culture through cutting-edge creative expression, further cementing Macau 2049 as a cultural bridge connecting China with the world.
The event was guided by the Publicity Department of the Henan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Henan Provincial Cyberspace Administration, and co-organized by Weibo, Sina, the Publicity Department of the CPC Zhengzhou Municipal Committee, and the Zhengzhou Municipal Cyberspace Administration. This cultural showcase highlighted the year’s most influential figures and moments in Chinese arts and culture, honoring tradition, cross-disciplinary creativity, and the richness of the humanistic arts. The award ceremony took place on August 25, where Catarina Lio, Executive Producer of Macau 2049, attended as an honored guest and accepted the award on behalf of the production.
Macau 2049 pushes beyond conventional presentations of intangible cultural heritage. It brings together eight distinct Chinese art forms, including Hua’er, Khoomei, Song and Dance of the Miao People, and Peking Opera. These traditions are reimagined through cutting-edge technologies such as air fountains and biomimetic robots. The result is a vivid, multi-sensory experience that bridges traditions and generations, creating a shared cultural resonance. It has opened a new window into Chinese heritage for global audiences while also sparking renewed cultural pride among Gen Z viewers. At the ceremony, the production team also launched “Culture in Action”, a national campaign inspired by a 12,500-kilometer journey across the Chinese cultural landscape. The campaign encourages the public to take part in the living legacy of intangible heritage through interactive, tech-powered experiences.
Since its debut in December last year, Macau 2049 has garnered widespread acclaim, winning multiple accolades, including the 6th China Cultural Tourism Pioneer Award 2025 and the 2024 Weibo Cultural Tourism IP Award. MGM remains committed to pioneering new ways to integrate culture and technology, helping to carry Chinese civilization forward into a new era.
