POLY MGM MUSEUM and Tan Dun Jointly Bring Dunhuang’s Legacy to Life on Mid-Autumn Night
Macau Premiere of “The Vanishing Mogao Caves” Delivers a Stunning Experience
The Macau premiere of “The Vanishing Mogao Caves” concert concluded today at MGM MACAU’s Fantasy Box. After the show, Tan Dun, performers and representatives of MGM management took a group photo.

[October 8, 2025, Macau] On the evening of the Mid-Autumn Festival, POLY MGM MUSEUM, in collaboration with UNESCO Global Goodwill Ambassador and internationally acclaimed composer-conductor Tan Dun, proudly presented the Macau premiere of “The Vanishing Mogao Caves” concert on October 6 at MGM MACAU’s Fantasy Box. As an essential extension of the Museum’s newly opened exhibition “Silk Roads Beyond Borders”, the concert drew nearly 500 guests, including prominent figures from Macau’s cultural, arts, and performing sectors, to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival and explore the enduring legacy of Dunhuang civilization.

Guided by the concept of a “living museum”, Tan Dun conducted the performance alongside the Dunhuang Academy Ancient Music Consort, reviving Tang Dynasty compositions such as Changsha Maiden Prelude, Ruyi Niang, and Konghou Yin. These works were performed using ancient instruments reconstructed from Dunhuang murals—including reverse-held gourd pipa, tang sheng, bamboo flute, xiqin, bili, five-string pipa, and phoenix-headed konghou. The concert fused multimedia visuals and AI technology to create an immersive Mogao Caves experience, allowing audiences to hear the spiritual echoes of the Mogao Caves and witness the power of cultural continuity beyond artistic expression.

During the post-performance sharing session, Tan Dun said, “Following ‘Buddha Passion’, it is an honor to join forces once again with MGM to continue our journey into the depths of Dunhuang’s cultural soul. ‘The Vanishing Mogao Caves’ is the culmination of years of research and contemplation on the ancient musical instruments depicted in Dunhuang’s murals, as well as the music and dance scores once housed in the Mogao Caves. Macau, as a vital crossroads of East and West, is an essential stop on this journey. Whether through the exhibition of ancient Silk Road instruments I’ve reconstructed, or this concert that revives millennia-old melodies, we offer a tribute to the spirit of the Silk Road. I hope this inspires more people to reflect on how culture disappears, revives, and shines anew through time.”

Pansy Ho, Chairperson & Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited, shared, “MGM is committed to amplifying the narrative of Chinese culture and illuminating its timeless brilliance on the global stage. ‘The Vanishing Mogao Caves’ reimagines Dunhuang’s legacy into a multisensory artistic experience. Drawing from the shared Silk Road heritage between Macau and Dunhuang, and powered by the advanced technology of Fantasy Box, we’ve created a culturally unique and high-quality original performance for Macau. This complements the ‘Silk Roads Beyond Borders’ exhibition at the POLY MGM MUSEUM, together advancing and extending the essence of Chinese civilization. Looking ahead, MGM will continue joining hands with Poly Culture to integrate tourism, leisure, and the arts—telling China’s story in a global language and ensuring Chinese culture continues to resonate through time, with Macau as the bridge to the world.”

“Silk Roads Beyond Borders” to Bridge the Past and Present

To mark the 12th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative, POLY MGM MUSEUM unveiled its brand-new exhibition “Silk Roads Beyond Borders” on October 1, 2025. Drawing from the rich cultural heritage along the Eurasian Silk Road and framed by the dynamic exchange between Eastern and Western civilizations, the exhibition features four thematic chapters—Through Sand and Wind, Gilded Threads, The Golden Bough, and Road to the Future—and over 200 rare artifacts, vividly reimagining the epic narrative of millennia-long civilizational exchange.

A key highlight of the exhibition focuses on Dunhuang civilization, showcasing the works of generations of scholars including Chang Shuhong and Chang Shana—paying tribute to over 80 years of dedication to the preservation of Dunhuang art. Also featured are ancient Silk Road instruments meticulously reconstructed by Tan Dun after years of research, forming a cross-media cultural dialogue with “The Vanishing Mogao Caves” concert. MGM invites the public to experience the contemporary revival of Chinese civilization on a global stage, extending the artistic and cultural resonance of the concert. The Museum will also present a series of immersive, intergenerational arts and cultural programs, offering audiences of all ages a journey through time and space to explore the enduring spirit of the Silk Road.
