MGM Launches Macau’s First Fully Localized Playing Card Recycling and Upcycling Program
Harnessing Innovative Technology to Advance the Circular Economy and Support Macau’s Green Transition and Economic Diversification
MGM officially launches Macau’s first fully localized playing card recycling and upcycling program.

MGM continues to integrate sustainability into its daily operations, actively supporting the nation’s “Dual Carbon” goals, the innovation-driven, green and low-carbon development direction outlined in the National 15th Five-Year Plan, and the Macau SAR Government’s Long-term Decarbonization Strategy. By leveraging innovative technology to drive industrial advancement, the Company is helping create new practical applications and growth pathways for Macau’s diversified industries, while opening new directions for sustainable development. Today (March 24), MGM officially launched the “Innovation and Technology Empowerment — MGM’s Localize Playing Cards Recycling and Upcycling Program”, becoming the first integrated resort in Macau to realize a fully localized, end-to-end recycling and upcycling system for used playing cards. The initiative further demonstrates MGM’s strong commitment to green technology applications, promoting the reutilization of waste resources, and supporting Macau’s appropriate economic diversification.

Mr. Kenneth Feng, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited, stated: “MGM has always been committed to exploring more efficient and forward-looking sustainability solutions through innovative technology. In response to the National 15th Five-Year Plan’s call to harness innovation and technology to drive green transformation, this program not only reflects our efforts to enhancing resource efficiency through technology but also highlights MGM’s determination to collaborate with local tech enterprises in transforming research and development achievements into practical applications. Through innovative initiatives such as this, we hope to inject more creativity and practical possibilities into the diversification of local industries. Looking ahead, MGM will continue to leverage its leading role, joining hands with all sectors of society to contribute to Macau’s green transition and high-quality development.”

The program is a collaborative effort between MGM and local tech firm Fnetlink Technology Company Limited, building on the world’s first smart, automated card-shredding solution co-developed by the two parties in 2023. Through an automated intelligent shredding system, used playing cards are processed into shredded material and recycled on-site into high-quality recycled fibers without the use of water. These fibers can then be transformed into a variety of eco-friendly packaging materials, including filler materials and recycled boards. The new solution promotes the reutilization of waste resources while creating more possibilities for the application of green materials and the extension of related industries.

Upon full implementation, the program is expected to recycle and upcycle approximately 3,000 tons of used playing cards annually, achieving a 100% recycling rate. The entire process will not only significantly reduce solid waste disposal, but also effectively lower the carbon footprint associated with cross-regional transportation through its localized processing model. This fully embodies the principles of a circular economy and represents a concrete step toward supporting Macau’s development as a low-carbon city and a green economy.

The launch ceremony was officiated by distinguished guests, including Lio Chi Chong, Acting Director of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ); Vai Hoi Ieong, Deputy Director of the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA); Cheang Hio Man, Deputy Director of the Economic and Technological Development Bureau (DSEDT); Cheang Kun Wai, Member of the Administrative Committee of the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT); Ray Chao, Senior Manager of the Investment Promotion and Commerce Development Affairs Department of the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM); Kenneth Feng, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited; Han Tian, Chief Operating Officer of MGM China Holdings Limited; and Elaine Wong, General Manager of Fnetlink Technology Company Limited.
