MGM Holds Awakening Lion Sharing Session with Macau and Guangzhou Dancers Associations

To Promote Local Dance Art through the Essence of Lingnan Culture

Oct 6, 2020

With a dedication to the inheritance of Chinese culture, MGM collaborated with Macau Dancers Association last year to present Chinese folk dance drama Jinggang Jinggang at MGM Theater. Buoyed by the overwhelming response, the two parties recently teamed up with Guangzhou Dancers Association to hold the “Ethnic Dance Drama – Awakening Lionsharing session at MGM MACAU and had attracted about 150 participants. MGM was honored to have Shi Qianjin, President of Guangzhou Dancers Association and Chief Director of Awakening Lion, to introduce how he composed this distinctive Lingnan folk dance drama, which was staged in celebration of China’s National Day. He also shared on the integration of dance, music and cultural & creative industries, as well as an analysis on current art marketing trends.

Hubert Wang, President and Chief Operating Officer of MGM, said, “MGM continues to promote lion dance, a significant piece of Lingnan culture, as part of our effort to foster cultural inheritance. In addition to hosting the ‘MGM Lion Dance Championship – Macau International Invitational’ for eight years, we organized the annual “Junior Lion Dance Training Program” six years ago and have nurtured around 380 future lion dance masters. Awakening Lion is the first stage performance to embody a fusion of Lingnan folk dance, lion dance and martial arts in a creative manner. MGM hopes this sharing session would inspire local creative professionals and dance enthusiasts to unleash their creativity and give a fresh interpretation of traditional Chinese culture.”

The “Performance to Celebrate the 71st Anniversary of the National Day of the People’s Republic of China and the Haojiang Moonlight Night – Ethnic Dance Drama Awakening Lion” was held on October 1 at the Macao Cultural Centre. It was jointly organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government and the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR, co-organized by the Guangzhou Municipal Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism Bureau and presented by the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theater. A story of two teenage lion dancers who demonstrated strong patriotic spirit, Awakening Lion integrates the essence of Lingnan culture, including Southern Fist (Nanquan), Southern Lion Dance (Nanshi) and woodblock narrative singing.

To fulfil its pledge of introducing traditional Chinese culture to the younger generation, MGM invited participants of its “Junior Lion Dance Continuous Training Program” to the premiere show of Awakening Lion. The experience allowed them to appreciate an amazing blend of lion dance and folk dance, a showcase of Lingnan culture’s openness and inclusiveness.
