MGM Hosts “Healthy Workplace Happy Life” to Promote Occupational Health and Safety

Highlighting the Theme of "Zero Work Injury, We All Have Responsibility"

Oct 28, 2020

In view of raising team member’s awareness on occupational health and safety, MGM organized the “Healthy Workplace Happy Life” activity this month, with the support of Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL), Macao Federation of Trade Unions (FAOM) and Women’s General Association of Macau. Comprised of a series of fun happenings, including seminars, design competitions, fitness classes and roadshows, the activity aims to remind team members of work safety and personal wellness, with the theme of "Zero Work Injury, We All Have Responsibility."

The kickoff ceremony of “Healthy Workplace Happy Life” was held at the back-of-house area of MGM COTAI, attended by guests of honor including Wong Chi Hong, Director of DSAL; Chan Chon U, Acting Deputy Director of DSAL; Lam Iok Cheong, Chief of Occupational Safety & Health Department of DSAL; Ho Sut Heng, President of FAOM; Lam Un Mui, President of Women’s General Association of Macau; Wendy Yu, Executive Vice President of Human Resources of MGM; Antonio Menano, Executive Vice President of Legal and General Counsel; and Michelle Chiu, Vice President of Human Resources.

Wendy Yu, Executive Vice President of Human Resources of MGM, said, “As a responsible enterprise and employer, we strive to provide a healthy and safe workplace for all team members. Since the opening of MGM, we have set up a specialized department which is in charge of evaluating risks and provides enhancement solutions for workplace safety. We also collaborate closely with DSAL, where we co-signed the Occupational Safety and Health Charter in 2017 and hosted “Hotel & Catering Occupational Safety Card” training in 2018, a widely recognized training participated by 5,300 team members.  With all these efforts, we saw a significant decline in work injury, where we have recorded a 11% drop last year, and even 59% this year. We will continue to communicate with all parties to achieve the goal of having zero work injury.”

A great supporter to the event, DSAL set up various health check booths and a seminar on spine care, which was to provide tips on preventing and improving the issue of long-term work fatigue. On top of these, MGM also collaborated with Women’s General Association of Macau and FAOM to host fitness classes of “Shoulder Cervical Spine Physiotherapy Yoga” and “Qigong Ba Duan Jin Experience” respectively. The latter, taught by trainers of FAOM, made its return after receiving overwhelming responses last year, enabled team members to learn about the gentle yet effective movement sequence of Chinese Qigong to improve their physical conditions.

The two-week roadshow took place at the back-of-house areas of both MGM MACAU and MGM COTAI.  On top of a lineup of mini game booths and fitness tests, Risk and Safety Management also set up a booth to showcase the equipment and standards on assessing risks, where team members could learn more about the safety measures implemented around their workplace. On the other hand, the departmental “Occupational Health and Safety Promotional Design Competition”, was also introduced, where departments were invited to team up and design promotional materials in cultivating a positive health and safety workplace culture. The event also gave recognitions to the department with highest completion rate in “Hotel & Catering Occupational Safety Card” training, which was Facility Management.
