[Macau, September 20, 2017] MGM is making donations and offering volunteer support for the Macau community post Typhoon Hato. Immediately after the typhoon, MGM has proactively communicated with various community associations, seeking ways to work collaboratively and not overlap with other resources so as to offer the best possible support.
Over the past three weeks, the Company has made a vast effort towards the speedy recovery of local community groups, including the purchase of rehab buses for Caritas de Macau and Fuhong Society of Macau; stair aids for Caritas de Macau; donations to repair damage to the exterior and interior of Sao Jose Ka Ho School; purchase of diagnostic equipment and setup of an audiometer testing room for Macau Deaf Association; and donations to Macau Special Olympics’ social enterprise, Sociedade de Ngai Chun Se Ltda, to purchase cleaning equipment.
During the week of Typhoon Hato, the Golden Lion Volunteer Team, who joined forces with União Geral das Associações dos Moradores de Macau (UGAMM) and Macau Federation of Trade Unions, helped distribute meal boxes and water to senior citizens. Last week in collaboration with UGAMM Peng On Tong Calling Service Center, the Volunteer Team set out to Rua da Praia do Manduco which is the city’s worst-affected area, and Seac Pai Van, to visit nearly 120 senior citizens and chat with them to show care and compassion. A goodie-bag containing food, flashlight, duct tape and typhoon preparedness tips was also prepared for each senior citizen. The volunteers also continued their efforts to clear debris in Coloane, resuming the natural beauty of Macau.
Aside from these prompt measures, MGM is supporting the improvement of disaster-response capabilities for the community, and helping the community to be well-equipped when facing future disaster situations. The Company has sponsored staff of Caritas de Macau to participate in the disaster management training in Nepal to groom more trained locals for future emergencies.
Mr. Grant Bowie, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited, said, “A majority of Macau has been impacted by this typhoon, but it has brought about the united spirit of Macau residents with their swift actions and selfless effort to help each other. Macau is the community where we do our business and our employees live, it is crucial for MGM to join hands and unite with the community. With our ethos of ‘Creating a Better Macau,’ we will not only focus on rebuilding Macau in the short term, but more importantly, the sustainable recovery of our local community in the long run.”
MGM’s collective pledge from MGM China Holdings Limited, MGM Resorts International and Ms. Pansy Ho to support the rebuilding of Macau in the aftermath of Typhoon Hato is being allocated to support MGM’s employees, local SMEs and the wider community, for their near- and long-term recovery.
