MGM COTAI has achieved a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title on January 19, 2019. The Spectacle at MGM COTAI is the record holder of the largest free-span gridshell glazed roof (self-supporting), making it the first architectural and structural GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for Macau, China. To celebrate this groundbreaking achievement, MGM hosted a technical seminar at MGM COTAI on June 15 for nearly 400 people from the engineering community of Macau and Hong Kong. Dr. Siu Yin Wai and Mr. Anthony Cheng from Siu Yin Wai & Associates Limited, as well as Mr. Ben Wong and Mr. Simon Leung from China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Limited, were invited as speakers for the seminar, to address and analyze the construction and challenges in development design of this engineering marvel.
This seminar is officiated by Mr. Grant Bowie, Chief Executive Officer & Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Ltd. and representatives from the eight co-organizing professional institutions from Macau and Hong Kong. They are: Mr. T.C. Kan, Chairman of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering Hong Kong Branch; Mr. Joe Wu, Chairman of the Macau Institution of Engineers; Mr. Paul Tse, Chairman of Macao Association of Building Contractors and Developers; Mr. Leong Iam Chong, Chairman of Macau Society of Civil and Structural Engineers; Prof. Cheng-Zhong Xu, Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Macau; Dr. James Lau, Chairman of the Institution of Structural Engineers (Hong Kong Regional Group); Prof. Ben Chan from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Mr. Sam Chan, Secretary of the Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction.
Mr. Grant Bowie, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited, said in his welcome speech, “MGM always strives to innovate, and is committed in creating something significant and different in the city that is engineered with a sense of humanity. In completing this almost-impossible construction of the Spectacle, we are grateful to have the contributions from numbers of intelligent minds including the four speakers of this seminar throughout the journey. I believe the conversations and presentations conducted by our experts would definitely inspire the engineering community of Macau and Hong Kong to continue pursue extraordinary and innovation.”
Engineered by Siu Yin Wai & Associates Limited (Hong Kong), the Spectacle Roof is a meticulously engineered steel diagrid structure spanning over the podium space with a clear longitudinal span up to 138.5m, without being supported by any internal columns. During the seminar, Dr. Siu Yin Wai and Mr. Anthony Cheng discussed a wide spectrum of topics, ranging from hybrid construction of foundation, excavation and substructure of MGM COTAI, all the way to the design, offloading analysis and sequences of the Spectacle Roof. They also shared their insights on the structural system, wind and lateral stability model of the MGM Theater, the Mansion and the main hotel building. The seminar continued with the presentation by Mr. Ben Wong and Mr. Simon Leung, who shared their experiences on the fabrication and construction of the Spectacle, as well as the challenges and solutions conducted along the way.
