It is where they are free to discover their potentials, in collaboration with MGM, to create excitingly new works of art that will open endless possibilities for artistic expression and experience, and engage in dialogue with a world-class art collection for making great moments.”
Alchemist and Study of Uffizi: A Bouquet of Flowers No.1
Spurred by its mission to combine tradition and innovation while connecting East and West, MGM Chairman’s Collection strives to bring the world to China and China to the world using art as a conduit. The collection sets a stage for MGM’s unique public art space, where arts are made accessible to all.
Alchemist and Study of Uffizi: A Bouquet of Flowers No.1 are prominent artworks of Guo-Qiang’s latest project “An Individual's Journey Through Western Art History” kicked off in 2018. The former was an exhibit in the artist’s solo exhibition “The Spirit of Painting. Cai Guo-Qiang at the Prado” in 2017, drawing inspiration from the alchemist symbolism of ‘the green lion devouring the sun’ to underline the energy conversion brought by gunpowder and the explosive creativity of human beings. The latter, on the other hand, is part of “Flora Commedia: Cai Guo-Qiang at the Uffizi” solo exhibition, which is a cultural dialogue combining colorful ashes and pressed, precious Italian flowers that appear on Renaissance works of art to depict the subtle connection between the nature, the universe and sentiment.
More than exciting new additions to MGM’s public art space, the acquisition of Alchemist and Study of Uffizi: A Bouquet of Flowers No.1 for the Chairman’s Collection enriches the artistic atmosphere of Macau community with gallery magnum opuses and preaches perpetual humanity at the time celebrating both the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Macao SAR.
A gorgeous celebration of patriotism and family
The captivating pyrotechnic show in the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China is a feat of Guo-Qiang’s perpetuity to patriotism and family. As depicted in the special screening of documentary Sky Ladder: The Art of Cai Guo-Qiang today at MGM Theater, it is the element of hometown and the miracle power of family that has been accompanying with Guo-Qiang to realize his artistic dream for almost two decades.
Following the documentary screening is a dialogue between Guo-Qiang and 600 locals and youths on the prospect of art in Macau, in which he shared his insight on the unlimited possibilities in future. The session was concluded with a surprise from Guo-Qiang, a director’s cut of the firework performance honoring the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, as a present to celebrate the double jubilation with Macau.
