MGM COTAI Named World’s Best New Skyscraper
First Building in Macau Recognized by the Emporis Skyscraper Awards
MGM COTAI has been named the world's best new skyscraper in 2018 by the Emporis Skyscraper Awards with its innovative design concept of staking Chinese jewelry boxes.

MGM’s integrated resort in Macau, MGM COTAI, is honored to be declared the world's best new skyscraper in 2018 by the Emporis Skyscraper Awards, one of the most renowned architecture prize for skyscrapers. Being the first building in Macau to receive this accolade, MGM COTAI, designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, was selected from almost 500 new skyscrapers around the world with its overall innovative and spectacular design.

The Emporis Skyscraper Award jury comprised of international architecture experts was fascinated by the unique structure that is based on the idea of nine Chinese jewelry’s boxes stacked upon each other, forming two interconnected towers. The asymmetrical design and golden coloring create a dynamic and glamorous appearance, which fits the atmosphere of Macau, affirmed in a statement by Emporis.

Grant Bowie, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited, said, “With innovation engrained in our DNA, we are extremely proud to have MGM COTAI voted by the jury, making the year’s best new skyscraper stands in Macau. This award not only makes MGM COTAI a creative architectural masterpiece, but also exemplifies our vision on reinforcing Macau’s position as a World Center of Tourism and Leisure with our award-winning landmark.”

John Bushel, Principal of Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, said, “We are delighted with this award and the recognition of this innovative design that combines two towers into one dynamically stacked composition. We worked closely with MGM Development Team, and this award is a testament to successful collaboration and joint vision. From the outset, the vision was to create a landmark of the highest architectural quality that would stand out in its approach to scale, facade expression, and imagery.”

The Emporis Skyscraper Award is the only prize for high-rise buildings awarded annually and on a global basis. Nominees and winners are recognized with their excellence in both aesthetic and functional design.

Prior to this accolade, MGM COTAI has scored numbers of major architecture recognitions across the globe shortly after its opening. The Spectacle, a multifunctional immersive space of creative and dynamic design situated at the heart of MGM COTAI, has recently earned the first architectural and structural GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title in Macau with the world's largest free-span, grid-shell glass roof. The property is also the largest property and the first mega-size complex project in Macau to achieve the Three-Star certification under the China Green Building Design Label, the highest and most prestigious ranking in the Label, which recognizes the endeavor of environmental sustainability MGM commits in its property design.
