MGM is always committed to making our community a better and more inclusive place for people with disabilities and the underprivileged. Recently, the Company joined hands with Fuhong Society of Macau to provide a series of food and beverage related vocational trainings to the mental health rehabilitants of Fuhong, who are working at the restaurant Portuguese Corner, the latest vocational training project at its Po Choi Center. MGM pastry chefs and restaurant service team members conducted related trainings for the group to equip them with solid skills, hence restoring their confidence to re-integrate into the society.
Besides being a Portuguese – Macanese style restaurant, Portuguese Corner is also a vocational training project managed by Fuhong, where job opportunities and on-job training are offered to mental health rehabilitants. In the past month, MGM sent its team members to the restaurant and coached a series of trainings on-site, including core-service procedures and customer service manners. On top of those, a special culinary training session was also arranged for the restaurant’s kitchen trainees at the commissary kitchen of MGM COTAI. MGM’s pastry chefs taught these trainees a handful of professional techniques and preparation of two Portuguese desserts, Sarradura and Leite Crème, which are now served at the restaurant. Not only the trainings helped enrich the menu selection, they also pushed the restaurant operations towards a more professional standard.
Wendy Yu, Executive Vice President of Human Resources of MGM, said, “Over the years, we have established a close partnership with Fuhong to provide different vocational training options for people with disabilities utilizing our own resources. We are dedicated to supporting and helping each of them to develop a career of their own, just like everyone else in the society. In the future, MGM will continue to roll out more diverse programs to raise awareness of social inclusions in the local community.”
Jennifer Chau, Director of Fuhong Society of Macau, expressed her gratitude, “Thanks to the continuous and devoted support of MGM, our vocational training services have become more professional and versatile, which offer more career options for our trainees. In this collaboration, we especially appreciate the industry insights and professional standards shared by the MGM team members, which will certainly help the trainees in their day-to-day operations, and more importantly in their future careers.”
For years, MGM has been partnering with Fuhong to provide vocational trainings of the hospitality industry for their trainees. Since 2007, MGM has hired more than 100 people with disabilities for various departments across the properties. Currently, there are eight of them with mild physically or intellectually disabilities working just like everyone else in the F&B and Housekeeping departments. Apart from this, last year both parties launched the MGM Vocational Training Room, a long-term vocational program facilitated by MGM Housekeeping trainers. Trainees can receive housekeeping training in highly realistic surroundings, while also being able to gain useful knowledge and skills of the hospitality industry.
