With the aim of advocating social inclusion, as well as introducing lion dance and the inheritance of Lingnan culture to the younger generation, MGM partnered with Macau Special Olympics (MSO) to organize a series of school performances for the MSO Lion Dance Team. Invited to perform at various local schools and social welfare organizations, these opportunities enable the Team to showcase their talent and promote social inclusion with their exhilarating lion dance performances.
Highlighting the theme of “Exercise for stronger physique to fight the epidemic”, the Lion Dance School Performance program series has already kick-started in October and left its footprints at Escola Kai Chi and Escola Caritas de Macau. To date, the MSO Lion Dance Team comprised of more than 20 members with intellectual disabilities have performed their lively lion dance moves for over 300 students and teachers at the two schools. During their performances, MGM volunteers cheered for the Team, and provided anti-epidemic information as well as distributed goodie bags for the students.
Hetzer Siu, Chief Executive Officer of MSO, said, “MSO Lion Dance Team has been founded for four years, and every member believes that they have the ability to master this traditional sport. Over the years, the Team has had many performance opportunities, where they also attained countless supports and recognitions from the public. Through discovering their interest in lion dance, they have become more confident. More importantly, they have established strong bonding among the Team, which forms a social platform that embraces social inclusion. We thank our long-term partner MGM for their unwavering support for the Team, as this school performance program offers our members the opportunities to share their passion for lion dance to the public even amid the pandemic, and take part in promoting social inclusion with their performances at major events. It really means a lot to the Team.”
It is of MGM’s utmost priority to promote lion dance, a significant piece of Lingnan culture. On top of hosting the “MGM Lion Dance Championship” and “Junior Lion Dance Program” since 2010 and 2015 respectively, MGM has lent its support to MSO in forming the first lion dance troupe of people with intellectual disabilities, which truly endorses the spirit of diversity and acceptance emphasized in Chinese culture. Since its establishment, the MSO Lion Dance Team have performed at many events organized by different organizations, including the remarkable performance at the award presentation ceremony of “MGM Lion Dance Championship 2018”. Other than school shows, recently the Team were invited to perform at the “International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2020” event by Macau Social Welfare Bureau, and will be performing at the “12th Occupational Ability Competition for People with Intellectual Challenges”, which will take place in mid-December.
