MGM is committed to fostering scientific education among Macau’s youth. Following the two-year cooperation agreement inked last year with the Association for Promotion of Science and Technology of Macau (MAPST), MGM rolls out the “MGM Youth Popular Science” series events this year. One of its flagship initiatives is the “Macau Space Dream Project” (Project) – co-launched with the Chinese Society of Astronautics (CSA), the Nation’s first-grade academic institution of aerospace. The Project, themed on aerospace technology, not only marks CSA’s maiden science education event in Macau, but also Macau’s first education series of space science designed exclusively for local youth through a three-pronged approach of “Learning, Practice & Research”. The overarching objectives are to cultivate future leaders in science and technology, who can further contribute to Macau's "1+4" development and inject youthful vitality into China's high-tech progress.
The Project comprises two branches, namely the "Macau Youth Creative Design Competition of Space Experiment" for Form 1 to 5 students in high schools, and the “Call from Deep Space" Experiential Camp for Primary 5 to 6 students in primary schools. These two endeavors are designed to cultivate the innovative spirit of local young students through hands-on experiences, and strengthen their practical abilities in science and technology. The inauguration ceremony of this Project was held on May 18 at the Grand Ballroom of MGM Macau, with nearly 300 guests in attendance including local teachers, students and representatives from the technology industry.
Telling Macau’s Stories to Propel Spirit of Manned Spaceflight
Hubert Wang, President and Chief Operating Officer of MGM China Holdings Limited, said, “MGM has always championed talent-driven development in Macau. Ever since we engaged in a partnership with MAPST last year, both parties have exerted their best to provide valuable popular science activities for over 500 local primary and secondary students. As aerospace science serves as an important demonstration of the Nation’s technological and innovative achievements, we decide to double down on educative efforts this year, by securing a partnership with the Nation’s prestigious academic institution of aerospace CSA to jointly bring forward the pioneering and unprecedented "Macau Space Dream Project". Through this program, we aspire to boost enthusiasm for manned spaceflight within the city, giving fresh impetus to the ‘1+4’ development, utilizing Macau’s strength to advance the Nation’s aerospace development.”
Chui Sai Peng Jose, President of MAPST, said, “MAPST strives to invigorate public interest in manned spaceflight and support scientific and technological development as well as talent cultivation in this field. By introducing this project that combines space science and payload technology for the first time, MAPST hopes to provide a platform that will broaden local youth's aerospace knowledge and improve their innovative and practical abilities, while driving their ambition to hammer away at pursuing their technological dreams.”
Wang Yiran, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of CSA, said, “In recent years, the Nation’s aerospace industry has advanced in leaps and bounds and continues to make remarkable contributions to the exploration of the vast universe. Through our collaboration with MGM and MAPST on the “Macau Space Dream Project”, we aim to spark the enthusiasm of Macau’s youth in space exploration, nourishing their nationalism and intelligence to serve the Nation, and thus sharing the stories of Macau and China with the world. We believe that in the future, more young people, especially those in Macau, will develop a greater deal of passion for aerospace and dedicate themselves to realizing China’s aerospace dream."
Macau Youth Creative Design Competition of Space Experiment
The "Macau Youth Creative Design Competition of Space Experiment", open to secondary students, is modeled on the successful “2024 International Space Science and Scientific Payload Competition” (ISSSP 2024). Prior to the contest, young participants can get to engage in precious and systematic training taught by national-level aerospace experts. The topics cover a wide array of realms, including case studies on space experiments and space payloads, alongside an overview of China's aerospace industry and space environment. Following this training, each participating team should submit a creative space experiment design to a panel of judges composed of CSA experts and professionals of Macau’s technology sectors for evaluation. The winning teams will have an opportunity to conduct research revolving around the "International Moon Day" in Harbin this summer. Additionally, the champion will be representing Macau to compete at the ISSSP 2024 held in Hong Kong this August.
“Call from Deep Space" Experiential Camp
This immersive one-day experiential camp enables local primary school pupils to learn aeronautical theories and hands-on knowledge from an interactive "script game". Experienced science tutors from the CSA and Macau will lead the camp, providing workshops such as making and launching water rockets, assembling satellite models, and more. This approach allows students to learn and practice science during fun, enabling students to better grasp aerospace science. Distinguished participants will be able to join an in-depth study tour of the China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition in Zhuhai this November.
The "Macau Space Dream Project" is jointly organized by MGM, MAPST and CSA; guided by the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ); and supported by the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Exchange Office of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST); School of Aerospace Engineering of the Beijing Institute of Technology; the Chinese Educators Association of Macau; the Macau Catholic Schools Association; Macao Civil Service Educational Association; the Macao Science Center; and the Macau Youth Science Education Association.
The officiating guests at the inauguration ceremony include Wong Ka Ki, Deputy Director of DSEDJ of Macao SAR; Yang Hao, Deputy Director-General of the Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR; Zong Qiugang, Macau Representative of CSA and Director of State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences of the Macau University of Science and Technology; Sio Hon Pan, Curator of the Macau Science Center and Chairman of MAPST; Ieong Pui Ian, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Educators Association of Macau; Irene Wong, Senior Vice President of Public & Community Relations of MGM; Heong Mui, Chairman of the Macao Civil Service Educational Association; Tang Huajun, Chairman of the Macau Youth Science Education Association; Wong Kin Ma, Representative of Macao Catholic Schools Association, and more.
Apart from the Project, MGM will continue to support various science-focused educational events hosted by MAPST, including the 2024 National Youth Science Camp and the opening ceremony and the first course of the Macau’s sub-camp, as part of initiatives of the “MGM Youth Popular Science series. MGM will also share its expertise in science application within integrated resorts, providing participating students with a deeper knowledge of technology through real-life case studies, with an aim to improve their overall scientific literacy.
