To celebrate the Chinese New Year (CNY), MGM is delighted to roll out the “Barra Lucky Blessing Market” series event, as an exciting, festive celebration with the public at the Barra District. Featuring prominent collaborations from Asia — including the Nation’s First-Class Museum - Prince Kung's Palace Museum, renowned Japanese illustrator Shinri Murakami, 35 SMEs and popular music bands from Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan — the event blends Chinese intangible cultural heritage, trendy illustrations, CNY creative market and live music. This unique convergence of tradition and modernity opens up a fresh and dynamic Lunar New Year experience for Macau residents and visitors alike.
Partnership with Prince Kung’s Palace Museum: honoring Chinese intangible cultural heritage with modern twist
In celebration of CNY, MGM extends its collaborations with the Nation’s First-Class Museum - Prince Kung's Palace Museum to bring its collection of 22 precious CNY painting to Macau for the first time. This exhibition will be held from January 24 to February 25 at the former Barra slaughterhouse site, in a bid to deliver blessings of joy and luck to the public while promoting the traditional Chinese culture.
As part of the festivities, MGM will host a “New Year Painting Creative Workshop” where visitors can engage in an ancient art of rubbing printmaking, a recognized Chinese intangible heritage craft. Participants can enjoy using modern reinterpretations of the museum’s CNY artworks to create their own Lunar New Year prints. To further enhance the experience, MGM has transformed the rubbing modules into exclusive Printmaking Material Set, available as the district’s exclusive CNY souvenirs that seamlessly combine cultural heritage with a modern twist.
“Barra Lucky Blessing Market”: A space packed with multiple experiences
In another partnership with a local creative retail brand Bookand, MGM presents an array of Lunar New Year activities at Barra District, revolving around elements of trend, arts, culture, and retail. Highlights to this initiative include a solo exhibition by renowned Japanese illustrator Shinri Murakami, showcasing his trendy illustrations in a creative crossover of art and retail. The exhibition is complemented by a Pop-up Cafe, offering themed dining experiences alongside exclusive merchandise. Ahead of the Spring Festival, Shinri will also join hands with local students to create a mural at Barra District, further enhancing its artistic appeal.
Japanese illustrator Shinri Murakami said: “It is an honour to showcase my artworks in such a historically rich space, and I sincerely thank MGM for inviting me to be part of it. The fusion of heritage and modernity in this district is truly inspiring. Together, we have created an innovative shared space where my art moves beyond traditional exhibitions, connecting with various activities and integrating into Macau’s daily life. I believe this creative, energetic environment will become a new cultural landmark for the city, breathing fresh energy into its cultural industries.”
The “Barra Lucky Blessing Market” also features the “Weekend Market", which will host over 35 SMEs from January 24-26 and January 31-February 2 around the Lunar New Year, offering a diverse range of goods spanning cultural creations, tech innovations, handicrafts, and pet products. Additionally, Music Festival will be held on two Saturdays (January 25 and February 1) onsite, bringing well-known bands and musicians from Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan together, such as Wendy Wander, SCAMPER and Otome Syndream, and more, celebrating the joyous festival with the crowd.
Embracing its “pet-friendly” spirit, all areas of Barra District will be open to pets. MGM warmly invites you to take a leisurely stroll at Barra District with your furry companions and immerse in the area’s distinctive CNY atmosphere, where cultural heritage meets contemporary flair.
