MGM Shines at the Hiring Disabled Staff Recognition Scheme for Seven Consecutive Years

Enhancing Workplace Equality and Social Inclusion

Nov 4, 2019

With the vision of Creating a Better Tomorrow Today, MGM is committed to hiring people with disabilities. The Company currently has over 40 disabled team members serving at different departments, enabling them to unleash their potentials and pursue continuous development. Such efforts earned MGM recognitions in both ‘employer’ and ‘employee’ categories of the 2019 Excellent Disabled Employees & Hiring Disabled Staff Recognition Scheme, a program co-organized by the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) and the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) of the Macao SAR. Inclusive of the new acclaim, MGM received honors in the ‘employer’ category for seven straight years and saw its employees earn distinctions for the fourth time.

Maggie Lei, who joined MGM Macau as Stewarding Supervisor nearly two years ago, received the title of Excellent Disabled Employee.  Although Maggie is hampered by hearing impairment, she has managed to get along with supervisors and colleagues and impress people with her conscientiousness, sophistication and strong sense of responsibility.  Entrusted with calculating food waste every quarter and working out waste materials from hotels on a yearly basis, Maggie has to collect and analyze sets of data.  She has been able to fulfil her duties with high efficiency, earning her three Leo Awards from MGM. In her spare time, Maggie helps foster barrier-free communication in the community through promoting and demonstrating sign language.

Mr. Grant Bowie, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited, said, “MGM believes that people with disabilities can also demonstrate high level of competence and a strong work ethic. We places great emphasis on developing team members’ capabilities and providing diverse training and learning opportunities. With our pledge to Make Great Moments for our team members and the community, we will continue to develop a diverse, inclusive workplace for creating a better Macau.”

To promote disability inclusion in the workplace, MGM has proactively collaborated with DSAL, IAS and other social organizations to hold a variety of seminars, workshops and activities. The initiatives not only allowed team members to understand the capabilities of the disabled, but also boosted departmental supervisors’ confidence in hiring them.  Through learning sign language and special communication skills, team members were able to take in the inner feelings of the disabled and help them integrate into the workplace.

In April, MGM worked with Fuhong Society of Macau to launch a project which allowed students with special needs to polish their employment skills at the MGM Vocational Training Room. Located at Pou Lei Center of Fuhong Society of Macau, the MGM Vocational Training Room is a mock-up of a hotel guest room featuring MGM design elements. Fuhong members received housekeeping training conducted by MGM Housekeeping trainers in highly realistic surroundings, through which they acquired the knowledge and skills in guest room cleaning as a way to broaden their horizons and integrate into broader society.
