MGM hosted a graduation ceremony for 40 graduates of this year’s “Junior Lion Dance Training Program” at Grande Praça, MGM MACAU. Guests of honor presented certificates along with words of encouragement to the graduates.
MGM strives to promote the inheritance of Lingnan culture to the local public for years. Since 2015, MGM organizes “Junior Lion Dance Training Program” every summer for local children. It aims to disseminate lion dance, a significant piece of Lingnan culture to the community, especially to the younger generation in order to strengthen their personal connection with the nation. Today, MGM hosted a graduation ceremony for 40 graduates of this year’s “Junior Lion Dance Training Program” at Grande Praça, MGM MACAU. The graduates brought to the guests an exuberant performance to showcase what they have learnt in the past seven weeks of training. Shortly after, junior lion dancers from “Junior Lion Dance Continuous Training Program” also presented an astonishing drum performance to cheer for the new graduates.
The “6th Junior Lion Dance Training Program” is co-organized by MGM and Hong Wai Dragon & Lion Dance Association Macau, and honorably supported by Cultural Affairs Bureau (ICM), Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), Sports Bureau (SB) and Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ). The graduation ceremony was officiated by Guests of Honor including Mok Ian Ian, Director of ICM; Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of MGTO; Luis Gomes, Head of Division of Youth Organizations and Training of DSEJ; Chow Kuok Wai, Head of Sports Development Department of SB; Chao Chi Man, Chairman of Hong Wai Dragon & Lion Dance Association Macau; and Hubert Wang, President & Chief Operating Officer of MGM, presented certificates along with words of encouragement to the graduates.
One of the graduates, the five-year-old Chou Tin Weng shared her experience in the Program, “When I saw my brother performing lion dance with stunning lion heads and costume back then, I found it really cool and made me want to learn this sport. In the past seven weeks, I learnt quite a lot of movements and techniques, and I found it very interesting. I wish I could continue playing this sport.” On the other hand, her mom Mrs. Chou said it was overall a good experience for her daughter, “Tin Wing has become more self-disciplined after taking part of this training program. She is now very determined and would even practice the movements at home. Through some systematic trainings, this Program got the children’s interest in learning more about the traditional Chinese culture, and at the same time a good activity for her physique. Afterall, it has been a fun and fruitful summer program for her.”
“Junior Lion Dance Training Program” is tailor-made for children aged between five to eight years old. An ideal occasion for young children to learn about lion dance, the Program trains the children to be good team players with self-discipline, as well as getting physically fit through a series of fun-packed training activities. Throughout the past six years, the Program has trained around 380 future lion dance masters. 80 of them even continue their journey with the “Junior Lion Dance Continuous Training Program”, where they get to perform at major events in town.
