MGM Extends Exclusive Art Basel HK Tours to Macau Local Students, Art Enthusiasts and Veterans of Creative Industries

Builds Linkage between Local Art Community and International Art Exhibitions to Develop Macau as Culturally Sustainable City

Mar 27, 2017

[March 27, 2017, Macau] MGM provided a unique opportunity to support the Macau creative community at Art Basel this month thanks to the sponsorship through its parent Company, MGM Resorts International (MGMRI).  Both MGMRI and MGM have a longstanding commitment to cultivate vibrant art and cultural destinations and this month were able to develop that further with Art Basel Hong Kong.

From March 23 to 25, MGM invited Macau community members to join three separate tours to Art Basel Hong Kong, including: 27 members of The Cultural Industries Fund and The Committee of Cultural Industries (CIC) of Macau SAR government, as well as a group of 18 students and professors from the Visual Arts and Design bachelor’s degree programs of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI).

The tours began in the morning with a ride on the MGMRI Sponsored Tram Project – Twenty-Five Minutes Older by Hong Kong artist Kingsley Ng, followed by an exploration in Wan Chai on its revamp for Lei Tung street through creative initiatives, and concluded with a dedicated tour at Art Basel. In addition, the groups had the opportunity to interact with Kingsley Ng, who is known for creating conceptual art projects that are community-engaging. He shared the background and stories about his cross-disciplinary artwork, as well as his art experiences which inspired the groups to further explore their creative capabilities.  In addition, Ms. Pansy Ho, Co-Chairperson & Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited joined in on a luncheon with Kingsley Ng to meet with members of CIC and exchanged ideas on future art and cultural development for Macau.

Mr. Jim Murren, Chairperson & Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited, said, “MGM has long been a leader in the development of arts and culture initiatives.  In Las Vegas and beyond, art is prevalent the company’s world-class resorts. Our global collaboration with Art Basel has created a great opportunity for MGM MACAU to connect with the local Macau art and creative community to collectively promote education and appreciation of art.”

Ms. Hsu Hsiu Chu, Vice President of the Committee of Cultural Industry of Government of Macao SAR, Member of Project Evaluation Committee of Cultural Industries Fund of Government of Macao SAR and Director of School of Arts of MPI, said, “This tour extended by MGM is a valuable experience for both the Committee members and students. While it gives us inspiration, it also gives us the opportunity to reflect on things we can do to develop future art initiatives through appreciating works from other artists. Macau possesses adequate resources commensurate to Hong Kong, and I hope to see art shows of Art Basel’s caliber in Macau in the near future. With the advantages of having world-class resorts, unique East-meets-West culture, and the drive for economic diversification from the government, it shall be achievable through collective efforts.”

MGM consistently promotes art appreciation and education with the vision to Create a Better Tomorrow Today. MGM has been organizing a wide array of art programs and tours for the local community since opening MGM MACAU in 2007, with the objective to engage and share the works of art to people from every walk of life. At MGM MACAU, we have the only dedicated Art Space in the industry and at MGM COTAI we recently unveiled the permanent art collection which will be showcased for all visitors to see when the resort opens in the second half of 2017.
